Description

The purpose of this position is to perform semi-skilled, skilled, and highly skilled labor involved in the maintenance and repair of parks, landscape areas, open spaces, rights-of-way, and trails to ensure these areas are safe, available, clean, functional, and aesthetically pleasing while following best management practices.  The position also participates in snow and ice control activities; operates light to heavy construction equipment; and directs a crew of seasonal workers in the performance of varied duties.

As a municipal organization, Greenwood Village is a provider of emergency services.  Some emergency situations, including weather-related emergencies, may necessitate Greenwood Village employees to assist in areas of work that may not be directly related to the employee’s specific job function, but which will be within the physical capabilities, training, and skills of the employee.

2024 - Wage Ranges

Parks Technician I:  $18.09 - $22.83 per hour
Parks Technician II:  $21.92 - $28.82 per hour (Requires a CDL)
Parks Technician III:  $24.51 - $32.23 per hour (Requires a CDL, certifications, and extensive experience)

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Parks Technician I - This is the entry-level class in the Parks Technician series.  This class is distinguished from the Parks Technician II by the performance of the more routine tasks and duties assigned to positions within the series.  Since this class is typically used as a training class, employees may have only limited or no directly related work experience.  Possession of an appropriate, valid driver’s license and a driving record satisfactory to obtain coverage by the Village’s insurance carrier is required. 

Parks Technician II - This is the full journey-level class within the Parks Technician series.  Employees within this class are distinguished from the Parks Technician I by the performance of the full range of duties as assigned.  Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit.  Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from the I level, or when filled from the outside, have prior experience, and meet all qualifications. Possession of an appropriate, valid class "B" commercial driver’s license and a driving record satisfactory to obtain coverage by the Village’s insurance carrier is required.

Parks Technician III – This is the advanced journey-level class within the Parks Technician series.  Employees within this class are distinguished from the Parks Technician II by years of experience and additional certifications and licenses.  Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit.  Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from the II level, or when filled from the outside, have prior experience, and meet all qualifications.



Requirements

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITY REQUIREMENTS:

Parks Technician I

Knowledge of:

  • Equipment and tools used in the maintenance and repair of parks and open spaces preferred.
  • Occupational hazards and standard safety practices preferred.

 Ability to:

  •  Learn operations and activities of a park maintenance program.
  • Learn to lead and oversee the work of seasonal staff.
  • Learn to interpret, explain, and enforce maintenance policies and procedures.
  • Operate a variety of maintenance and repair equipment, which includes various hand and power tools and light-duty equipment, in a safe and effective manner requiring hand/eye and hand/foot coordination.
  • Perform a variety of physically demanding work for extended periods of time and in unfavorable weather conditions including extreme heat and / or cold.
  • Perform heavy manual labor requiring a full range of physical motions including standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting of objects weighing up to 50-pounds, twisting and turning, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, climbing, balancing, crawling, reaching for objects with hands and arms, and using hands to finger and control objects.
  • Perform work in high-use parks in a safe and effective manner.
  • Perform work along high-volume roadways.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Experience and Training Guidelines:  Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: 

Experience:  One year of experience in the maintenance and restoration of parks preferred.

Training:  Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.  

Certificates and Licenses:  Possession of an appropriate, valid driver’s license and driving record satisfactory to obtain coverage by the Village’s insurance carrier. 

Parks Technician II

 In addition to the qualifications for Parks Technician I -

Knowledge of:

  • General practices applied in turf maintenance and plant care. 
  • Operations and activities of a park maintenance program.
  • Methods and techniques of repairing and maintaining parks and open spaces.
  • Equipment, tools, and materials used in area of work assigned.
  • Occupational hazards and standard safety practices. 

 Ability to:

  • Perform park maintenance and restoration work.
  • Lead and oversee the work of seasonal staff.
  • Interpret, explain, and enforce maintenance policies and procedures.
  • Operate a variety of maintenance and repair equipment, including various hand and power tools and light and heavy-duty equipment, in a safe and effective manner requiring hand/eye and hand/foot coordination.
  • Perform a variety of physically demanding work for extended periods of time and in unfavorable weather conditions including extreme heat and/or cold.
  • Perform heavy manual labor requiring a full range of physical motions including standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting of objects weighing up to 50 pounds, twisting and turning, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, climbing, balancing, crawling, reaching for objects with hands and arms, and using hands to finger and control objects.

  • Prioritize items needing attention.
  • Coordinate worksite operations for efficiency and safety.
  • Recognize hazards.
  • Work independently in the absence of supervision.
  • Be proficient in GIS/GPS to be able to add, remove and correct City assets.

Experience and Training Guidelines:  Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience: Previous experience in parks maintenance preferred.  

Training:  Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.

Certificates and Licenses:  Possession of an appropriate, valid class "B" commercial driver’s license and a driving record satisfactory to obtain coverage by the Village’s insurance carrier.   Valid flagger certification and forklift certification required within 180-days.  

 Parks Technician III

In addition to the qualifications for Parks Technician I and II -

Experience and Training Guidelines:  Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: 

Experience:  A minimum of two years of experience in the maintenance and repair of parks. Previous experience in assigned area preferred. 

Training:  Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.

Required Certificates and Licenses:

 West Side Turf, Landscaping and Equestrian Trail Crew

  1. Possession of a Colorado Pesticide Applicator’s License in at least Turf and Ornamental categories
  2. Annual demonstration of proficiency in independent setup and use of large tractors with turf maintenance attachments through equipment training, qualification testing, and field operation (outside candidates have one year to demonstrate).
  3. Possession of Sustainable Landscape Management Certification
  4. Possession of at least one of the following:
    1. National Association of Landscape Professionals (NALP) Landscape Industry Certified Technician (1 of 5 tests)
    2. National Association of Landscape Professionals (NALP) Landscape Industry Certified Lawn Care Technician with Internal Yearly Training Requirements
    3. National Association of Landscape Professionals (NALP) Landscape Industry Certified Lawn Care Manager with Internal Yearly Training Requirements
    4. Professional Grounds Management Society (PGMS) Certified Grounds Technician
    5. Sports Field Manager Association (SFMA) Certified Sports Field Manager
