2026 - Wage Ranges
Parks Technician I: $20.56 - $25.94 per hour
Parks Technician II: $23.76 - $32.75 per hour
Parks Technician III: $27.59 - $36.62 per hour

Job Summary:
The purpose of this position is to perform semi-skilled, skilled, and highly skilled labor involved in the maintenance and repair of parks, landscape areas, open spaces, rights-of-way and trails to assure these areas are safe, available, clean, functional, and aesthetically pleasing while following best management practices.
The position also participates in snow and ice control activities; operates light to heavy construction equipment; and to direct a crew of seasonal workers in the performance of varied duties.
Distinguishing Characteristics:
Parks Technician I:
This is the entry-level class in the Parks Technician series. This class is distinguished from the Parks Technician II by the performance of the more routine tasks and duties assigned to positions within the series. Since this class is typically used as a training class, employees may have only limited or no directly related work experience. Possession of an appropriate, valid driver’s license and a driving record satisfactory to obtain coverage by the Village’s insurance carrier is required.
Parks Technician II:
This is the full journey-level class within the Parks Technician series. Employees within this class are distinguished from the Parks Technician I by the performance of the full range of duties as assigned. Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit. Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from the I level, or when filled from the outside, have prior experience, and meet all qualifications. Possession of an appropriate, valid class "B" commercial driver’s license within 180 days and a driving record satisfactory to obtain coverage by the Village’s insurance carrier is required.
Parks Technician III:
This is the advance journey-level class within the Parks Technician series. Employees within this class are distinguished from the Parks Technician II by years of experience and additional certifications and licenses. Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise
and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit. Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from the II level, or when filled from the outside, have prior experience, and meet all qualifications.
As a municipal organization, Greenwood Village is a provider of emergency services. Some emergency situations, including weather related emergencies, may necessitate Greenwood Village employees to assist in areas of work which may not be directly related to the employees’ specific job function, but which will be within the physical capabilities, training, and skills of the employee.

Requirements
Essential Functions:
Perform a variety of physically demanding work for extended periods of time and in unfavorable weather conditions including extreme heat and/or cold.
Perform heavy manual labor requiring a full range of physical motion including standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting of objects weighing up to 50-pounds, twisting and turning, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, climbing, balancing, crawling, reaching for objects with hands and arms, and using hands to finger and control objects.
Primary Duties/Responsibilities:
Open Space, Horticulture and Forestry Crew
a. Coordinates and performs tree, perennial, and shrub planting for replacement and/or planting bed developments including digging holes either by hand or using equipment; oversees and performs the fertilization of trees and plants and the mulching placement around trees and performs technical skills related to chemical application in turf areas, open space, natural areas, and in shrub and mulched beds; uses high pressured spray equipment and hand sprayers; maintains and calibrates all spraying equipment and chemical safety equipment. Also, performs manual weed control as needed in turf and planting beds.
b. Performs pest control in open space and developed parks.
c. Performs and oversees the installation and repair of fences and barriers.
d. Maintains necessary logs; maintains records of all maintenance performed on equipment; maintains SDS and pesticide label on all chemicals in inventory and ensures material is transported securely and stored according to standards and codes.
e. Performs trash and recycling removal duties at all parks, native areas, and roadside areas throughout the Village.
f. Coordinates with other crews to ensure no disruption to other parks activities or maintenance operations.
g. Performs physically arduous work outdoors and in adverse weather conditions.
h. Operates light to heavy equipment and various hand and power tools to perform assigned duties.
i. Perform utility locates to request a locate ticket for any excavation, trenching, drilling or construction activities that require below groundwork.
j. Responds to and performs after-hours calls for service and emergency repair; works various shifts, as required, to provide necessary coverage, including responding to park concern requiring immediate attention outside of regular hours.
Snow and Ice Control – All Crews
a. Installs plow, sander, and other equipment on light duty trucks, UTVs and ATV’s.
b. Operates a single axle pick-up truck, UTVs, ATVs, snow blowers or shovels to remove snow and ice from trails and sidewalks. May operate single or tandem axle plow truck, which requires a class B CDL, to remove snow and ice from streets.
c. Loads sand in trucks using front-end loader and uses front-end loader to remove snow.
Leadership Responsibilities – All Crews
a. Leads, oversees, and participates in the work of the seasonal staff; reviews work to ensure proper work methods and techniques.
b. Collaborates with assigned supervisor to determine priorities and objectives; reviews established work schedules for assigned crew.
c. Identifies equipment and material needs; collaborates with other staff and contractors as appropriate.
d. Maintains records on equipment and material used, reviews information with assigned lead and supervisory staff.
e. Verifies the work of seasonal staff for accuracy, proper work methods, techniques, and compliance with applicable standards and specification.
f. Ensures adherence to standard safety precautions and practices.
g. Trains employees in proper work and safety methods.
Miscellaneous Duties – All Crews
a. Communicates and interacts with members of the public; responds to customer service requests.
b. Follows safety measures adhering to the Village’s safety policies and procedures; maintains and utilizes provided personal protective equipment (PPE) when conducting activities exposing employee to risk.
c. Assists in special projects, including set up and take down for special events, participating in annual clean-up programs, etc.
d. Performs minor maintenance on equipment and/or vehicles.
e. Cleans and maintains maintenance shop, tools, workspace, equipment, etc.
f. Maintains inventory of parts and supplies; replenishes supplies, when necessary, according to Village purchasing policies.
g. Performs related duties and responsibilities as assigned or required.
h. Requires the capability to properly and safely operate a wide variety of equipment used in parks maintenance and restoration including large mowers and zero turn mowers; edgers; line trimmers; ATVs; UTVs; tractors with aerator, spreader, top dresser, and over seeder attachments; backhoes; front-end loader; skid steer; forklift; ball drag; blowers; sprayers; air compressor; portable generators; pick-up truck; single and double axel truck; snow blowers; and hand tools.
i. Primary internal contact is with own or other maintenance crews for purposes of completing assignments. Primary external contacts are with park users, and equipment or material suppliers.
Required Skills/Abilities/Knowledge of:
1. Parks Technician I
a. Equipment and tools used in the maintenance and repair of parks and open spaces preferred.
b. Occupational hazards and standard safety practices are preferred.
c. Learn operations and activities of a park maintenance program.
d. Learn to lead and oversee the work of seasonal staff.
e. Learn to interpret, explain, and enforce maintenance policies and procedures.
f. Operate a variety of maintenance and repair equipment, which includes various hand and power tools and light-duty equipment, in a safe and effective manner requiring hand/eye and hand/foot coordination.
g. Perform work in high use parks in a safe and effective manner.
h. Perform work along high-volume roadways.
i. Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
j. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
k. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
2. Parks Technician II - In addition to the qualifications for Parks Technician I
a. General practices applied in turf maintenance and plant care.
b. Operations and activities of a park maintenance program.
c. Methods and techniques of repairing and maintaining parks and open spaces.
d. Equipment, tools, and materials used in area of work assigned.
e. Occupational hazards and standard safety practices.
f. Perform Park maintenance and restoration work.
g. Lead and oversee the work of seasonal staff.
h. Interpret, explain, and enforce maintenance policies and procedures.
i. Operate a variety of maintenance and repair equipment, including various hand and power tools and light and heavy-duty equipment, in a safe and effective manner requiring hand/eye and hand/foot coordination.
j. Use independent thought and decision making.
k. Prioritize items needing attention.
l. Coordinate work site operations for efficiency and safety.
m. Recognize hazards.
n. Work independently in the absence of supervision.
o. Be proficient in GIS/GPS to be able to add, remove and correct City assets.
3. Parks Technician III - In addition to the qualifications for Parks Technician I and II:
a. Experience in position or related field.
Preferred Qualifications:
1. Parks Technician I:
a. One year of experience in the maintenance and restoration of parks is preferred.
2. Parks Technician II:
a. Previous experience in parks maintenance preferred.
3. Parks Technician III:
a. A minimum of two years of experience in the maintenance and repair of parks. Previous experience in assigned area preferred.
Education and Experience Requirements:
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities to qualify.
1. Parks Technician I:
a. Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.
b. Possession of an appropriate, valid driver’s license and driving record satisfactory to obtain
coverage by the Village’s insurance carrier.
2. Parks Technician II:
a. Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.
b. Possession of, or ability to obtain within 180 days, an appropriate, valid class "B" commercial driver’s license and a driving record satisfactory to obtain coverage by the Village’s insurance carrier. Valid flagger certification and forklift certification required within 90-days.
3. Parks Technician III:
a. Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.
b. Possession of, or ability to obtain within 180 days, an appropriate, valid class "B" commercial driver’s license and a driving record satisfactory to obtain coverage by the Village’s insurance carrier. Valid flagger certification and forklift certification required within 90-days.
Open Space, Horticulture and Forestry Crew:
1. Possession of a Colorado Pesticide Applicator’s License in at least two of any of these categories: Turf, Ornamental, Rangeland, Right of Way, and Outdoor Vertebrate.
2. Annual demonstration of proficiency in independent setup and use of roadside mower, large tractor with open space maintenance attachments, and ATV with spray rig through equipment training, qualification testing, and field operation (outside candidates have one year to demonstrate).
3. Possession of Sustainable Landscape Management Certification.
4. Possession of at least one of the following:
a. National Association of Landscape Professionals (NALP) Landscape Industry Certified Technician (1 of 5 tests).
b. National Association of Landscape Professionals (NALP) Landscape Industry Horticultural Technician with internal yearly training requirements.
c. Professional Grounds Management Society (PGMS) Certified Grounds Technician.
d. Colorado State University (CSU) Certified Gardener Program with internal yearly training requirements.
Exception for required crew specific certifications – if a qualified Parks Technician III internally moves between crews, they shall have one year to complete the new requirements to remain at a level III.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Receives general supervision from the Park Supervisors. May exercise technical and functional supervision over seasonal or temporary workers. Parks Technician III’s may exercise technical and functional supervision over Parks Technician I’s and II’s.
Working Conditions:
Frequently exposed to safety hazards from equipment operated, manual labor, and work in high traffic areas. Job frequently requires physical effort requiring lifting of objects weighing over 50 pounds. Ambient outdoor temperature extremes.
This position may involve working a variety of schedules, including evenings and weekends and may be subject to work beyond normal scheduled hours including an emergency call in resulting from being called out for emergency situations creating dangerous conditions for the community. Work schedules can be changed with little, or no notice and mandatory overtime may be required with little or no advance notification.
