JOB TITLE: Sports Programmer FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
General Statement of Duties: Under the general direction of the Sports Programs Supervisor, the primary responsibility of the Sports Programmer is to assist in conducting, promoting, coordinating, and supervising assigned youth and adult sports programs.
Supervision Received: Works under the supervision of the Sports Programs Supervisor. May receive direction from the Sports Coordinator.
Supervision Exercised: Responsible for the supervision of assigned volunteers, interns and on-site staff.
JOB DESCRIPTION:
Examples of Duties: The following examples of duties are intended to be illustrative only and are not intended to be all inclusive.
- Assists in the promotion and advertisement of the program through the development and distribution of program flyers, registrations, e-blasts, and on-site follow-up.
- Maintains all necessary forms, paperwork, and attendance records of participants.
- Plans, organizes, initiates, and promotes the programs.
- Assists in the development and enforcement of rules, emphasizing safety and sportsmanship.
- Assists in the generation of game and tournament schedules.
- Assists in the recruitment, training and supervision of paid and volunteer staff as needed.
- Assists staff in clarifying rules to participants.
- Maintains cleanliness and order of the program area.
- Inventories, maintains, and distributes all program equipment and/or apparel.
- Reviews, revises (as needed) and distributes league information and rulebooks.
- Informs participants, recreation center facility staff, Sports Programs Supervisor, and Sports Coordinator of any changes in the program and/or schedule.
- Acts as an on-site liaison to assist participants and officials, as needed.
- Will assume league supervision and/or sports official responsibility for sports leagues, programs and camps, as needed. This position will heavily include on-site (in the field) duties along with administrative (office) duties as needed pending staffing and season.
- Problem-solves, communicates, and mediates issues between participants, staff, facility, and the general public.
- Reports any questions, concerns, program information, emergencies, etc. immediately to the supervisor.
- Maintains on-going communication with supervisor regarding program status.
- Ensures the safety of participants, spectators, staff, coaches, and scorekeepers by enforcing game rules and procedures and by role modeling safe behavior.
- Promotes good sportsmanship by being consistent in calling the games and enforcing game rules fairly.
- Supports the on-site supervisors in upholding and enforcing league rules and completing game reports.
- Provides exceptional customer service to promote and support HRCA recreational programs. Role models professionalism in dress and direct customer service.
- Maintains a professional, calm approach when handling conflict.
- The ideal candidate will have flexibility to work nights and weekends and collaborate with a variety of teammates/co-workers.
Physical and Environmental Standards: Most work is performed indoors in a busy setting where noise and interruptions prevail. Must be able to frequently sit and occasionally walk, stand, climb, bend, kneel, stoop, reach and lift, push or pull to perform tasks normally associated with this position. Manual dexterity is needed to type, write, use a calculator, and answer the phone. The ability to talk and hear via the telephone and through face-to-face communication is needed. Vision requirements include near and far acuity. Upper body strength is a requisite to lift/move a maximum of 40 pounds unassisted and 60 pounds with assistance. Certain programs will be performed outdoors in varying temperatures and climates and other environmental factors, including, but not limited to heat, humidity, sun, wind, rain, cold, ice and snow.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Advanced knowledge of the rules for a variety of sports. Ability to work with youth and adults in a recreational and competitive setting. Ability to supervise and provide effective support to volunteers, interns, and staff. Ability to organize, manage and direct multiple programs and perform multiple tasks. Must be computer literate. Ability to effectively communicate, both verbal and written, with internal and external customers.
Must possess a valid driver’s license, a clean motor vehicle record, and meet all HRCA driving policy standards, including pre-approval to drive from the HRCA insurance carrier. Strong situational awareness and adherence to safe driving practices are essential to ensure personal and public safety while working within a vehicle.
Must be 18 years of age or older.
Must pass a pre-employment background check and drug screening.
