Apex Park and Recreation District
Company Overview
Apex Park and Recreation District is a special district founded in 1956, not part of the City of Arvada or Jefferson County. It is a separate agency with its own taxing authority and with no connection to any other government agency. Special districts are created by state law to serve specific community needs-recreation, fire protection, water, etc.
Company History
In 1956, after several drownings in the area a group of concerned citizens founded North Jeffco Park and Recreation District so citizens would have a safe place to swim. The first facility, the North Jeffco Swimming Pool (later Fisher Swimming Pool) opened in 1958. Here are a few more highlights of the district’s history:
1959-1960: The Garrison Street Center is built.
1964-A bond issue was passed providing ballfields, Secrest Center and Swimming Pool, (opened 1966) and Ralston Center and Swimming Pool (dedicated in 1967).
1968-A bond issue was passed for construction of Indian Tree Golf Club, the Ice Arena, and for the acquisition of park land.
1970-1976-Lake Arbor Center and Swimming Pool was acquired; a horse arena was built; the Foundation was formed and plans were made for a sports complex and tennis center.
1979-George J. Meyers Swimming Pool opened February 12, 1979 named in memory of a former supervisor of North Jeffco Metropolitan Recreation and Park District’s summer swimming pool activities
1980s-The Harold Lutz Sports Complex was dedicated and Youth Memorial Complex was built. The Senior Recreation Center opened.
1990-The Racquetball and Fitness Center building was purchased, renovated and opened.
1997-Secrest Youth Park and Teen Center opened.
1998-A $25 million bond issue was passed for construction of the Apex Center, which opened in 2000, as well as Long Lake Ranch and Lutz Sports Complex renovation (Phase I).
2001-The Garrison Street Sports Center and Soccer Complex was dedicated.
2002-The redesigned and expanded Secrest Outdoor Swimming Pool opened in May. Play begins on new football/soccer fields at Long Lake Ranch.
2006-Voters pass a mill levy increase, 50% of which is earmarked for annual capital improvements.
2008-District name change to Apex Park and Recreation District.
2011-The district begins offering classes at the Simms Street Recreation Center. The Apex Field House opened December 12.
2013-Outdoor Pickleball Courts at the Simms Street Recreation Center open on November 8.
2016-A $25 million bond issue was passed for construction of six projects: Secrest Center replacement, Fitzmorris Site Center/Pool, Apex Tennis Center – renovate outdoor courts and 4 new indoor courts, Lutz Sports Complex improvements, Apex Center renovation and splash pad addition, Long Lake Ranch Regional Park improvements.
