Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Complies with District and industry related safety policies, procedures, and guidelines to ensure the safety of self, co-workers, park users and the community.
Park related maintenance including but not limited to maintenance of park infrastructure, various equipment operations, shelter and restroom cleaning, rule enforcement, snow removal, sidewalk sweeping, and assistance with special events.
- Comply with established safety policies, procedures, and guidelines.
- Always wear appropriate safety equipment including protective headwear, eye and ear protection, safety shoes, gloves, respirators, and breathing apparatus.
- Maintains a safe, clean environment in restrooms, shelters, skate park and tennis courts.
- Assists in setting up and taking down equipment from various parks in support of recreation programs, and community events.
- Performs custodial work as required and assigned, including sweeping, and mopping of floors, garbage removal and relining of trash cans, cleaning and stocking restrooms, cleaning shelters and surrounding areas, etc. or other work as needed.
- Prepares park facilities for reservations and scheduled recreational programs
- Maintains current skills and knowledge in proper and safe techniques of park services practices.
- Collects and disposes of solid waste from buildings and grounds, picks up litter from premises.
- Assists with the testing of water quality on public fountains, communicates with park users when fountains will be shut off due to a reservation or unsafe condition.
- Assists with education and enforcement of park rules such as dogs off leash, no motorized vehicles in the park and use of bicycles at Civic Green Park.
- Prioritize excellent internal and external customer service
- Assists with the distribution of District’s sign policy to appropriate community groups or organizations. Tracks weekend sign removals.
- Develop basic understanding of relevant web-based software.
- Keeps written and electronic records of work completed.
- Provides supervision/management with a weekly report of park activities.
- Coordinates with Reservation Coordinator regarding park and event schedules.
- Perform proper maintenance of District vehicles, equipment, and tools as applicable to the position.
- Snow removal duties will be assigned during winter months and may include weekend and nighttime hours operating plow trucks and tractors, as well as the use of snow shovels.
- Serve as a member of various employee committees, as assigned.
Qualifications
High School Diploma or GED required.
Must be over the age of 18.
Must hold a valid driver’s license and maintain a satisfactory driving record.
Two years’ of progressive experience in park services, sports fields, or related area of emphasis is a plus.
Necessary Knowledge, Experience, Skills and Abilities
Ability to learn the safe operation of listed tools and equipment, materials, and supplies used in janitorial services as well as the equipment and supplies used to complete minor repairs within 12 months of hire.
Ability to obtain CPR and Blood Borne Pathogens certification within 12 months of hire.
Must be able to lift heavy objects, walk and stand for long periods of time, and to perform strenuous physical labor under adverse field conditions.
Ability to effectively communicate with the public; ability to handle stressful situations; ability to make decisions based on established policies and procedures.
Work independently and complete daily activities according to work schedule.
Effectively communicate in writing and verbally including comprehending, following, and transmitting written and verbal instructions.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, other departments, contractors, officials and the public and work with people from diverse backgrounds and points of view as part of a team and working cooperatively with Urban Park Ranger staff.
Represent the District in a professional manner.
Ability to perform the essential duties listed above.
Must be available to work weekends.
Must be available to respond to on-call snow removal duties within 60 minutes of notification.
Supervision Received
Works under the direct supervision of the Park Services Supervisor and receives directions from Technician 3’s on projects and tasks as assigned.
Supervision Exercised
Supervise seasonal employees as assigned.
Work Schedule
Generally, the schedule is 6:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. During the busy season, the schedule is 4-day, 10-hour shifts including a weekend day. The work schedule will vary depending on weather conditions, projects, events, programs, meetings, and staffing levels, and will include some evening, early morning, weekend, and overtime hours.
Regular and predictable attendance is an essential function of the job.
On-call Schedule: This position is a part of the 24-hour on-call snow crew and will be scheduled for a period of two weeks at least four times per year with a 60-minute arrival window.
Tools and Equipment Used
High-pressure washer, pruning tools, High pressure washer, pruning tools, pickup truck with automatic/manual transmission, and water truck.
Lawn and landscape equipment includes tractors, mowers, edgers, weed trimmers, sprayers, utility vehicles, sweepers, plows, blowers, electric motors, pumps, sprinklers, irrigation systems, miscellaneous hand and power tools, etc. Operation of motor vehicles in tight spaces.
Computers, cell phone, Microsoft products (Excel, Outlook, etc.), web and database software, and desk phone. General office equipment such as multi-function printer scanner copier, web-fax, 10-key calculator, etc.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions and near moving mechanical parts. The employee frequently works in high, precarious places, and is exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to the risk of electrical shock.
The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
