We are now hiring lifeguards to work at our outdoor Sunset Pool, Union Reservoir, and indoor Longmont Recreation Center and Centennial Pool.  We offer FREE lifeguard certification classes for future employees, and can offer between $15.50-$16.20/hr depending on qualifications and experience.  Email Sara for information about free certification classes:  sara.taylor@longmontcolorado.gov 


Perform lifeguard duties at City owned and operated swimming pools and reservoirs by adhering to philosophies, policies and procedures of state, local and national agencies that certify or regulate lifeguards.


Incumbent is accountable for all duties of this job and other projects and responsibilities may be added at the City’s discretion.

Duties may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Assure patron safety by continuous scanning
  • Monitor activities in and near the water through patron surveillance.
  • Prevent injuries by minimizing or eliminating hazardous situations or behaviors.
  • Enforce facility rules and regulations and educate patrons about them.
  • Recognize and respond quickly and effectively to all emergencies.
  • Administer first aid and CPR, including using an AED as needed.
  • Execute EAP's when necessary.
  • Complete appropriate paperwork when necessary and submit it in a timely manner to immediate supervisor.
  • Maintain current certifications and all lifesaving skills as taught in the American Red Cross lifeguard program.
  • Attend and participate in staff meetings and/or trainings.


Very flexible schedule, and shifts are available anytime between 5am-9pm, Mon-Fri, and 7am-6pm, Sat-Sun.  



Education and Experience:

Has sound judgment.  Can decipher between life threatening and non-life threatening emergencies. Good physical condition and ability to perform lifeguarding procedures as stated by the American Red Cross. Must be at least 15 years of age.

Special Qualifications:

Current certifications in American Red Cross lifeguarding and CPR/PR. Waterfront and waterpark certification preferred.

Knowledge of:

Lifeguarding procedures and practices, including pool chemistry, emergency procedures, first aid, and CPR; use of standard lifeguarding equipment and techniques.

Ability to:

Prevent accidents through the enforcement of policies, rules and regulations governing the conduct of patrons using the pool; report potential physical hazards and unsafe conditions to supervisor; respond quickly and effectively in distress or emergency situations; maintain equipment and facilities in a safe and sanitary condition; collect fees and maintain attendance records; inspect facilities for cleanliness; test water chemistry and make necessary adjustments to comply with established' health standards; establish and maintain effective working relationships with other lifeguards, analyze and correct facility safety hazards; learn and adhere to the facility emergency procedures; sit and stay alert for extended periods of time in a hot environment; perform basic first aid, including CPR when necessary; fill out accident reports; maintain adequate visual coverage of the pool and pool area; recognize and prohibit any unsafe activity; deal firmly, courteously  and consistently with the public.
